Meet the Community:

Mrs Jones  gained a BA in Business Studies at Newcastle Upon Tyne University moving on  to do her teacher  training (B.Ed.) at Sunderland University where she  specialised  in Business Education.     Mrs Jones then chose to join the teaching profession relatively late in her career but feels that the industrial experience gained prior to teaching has proved invaluable in the classroom.

At CCHS Mrs Jones teaches Business Studies to 11, 12 and 13 and she is also Assistant Director of Enterprise Learning.

Ms Dale gained a BA (Hons) in Business Studies from Staffordshire University and has Post Graduate Certificates in Health Policy from Staffordshire and Management from Middlesex University. Additionally has a Post Graduate Certificate of Education from Wolverhampton University. Previous roles before entering education included working for a bank in Birmingham, Admin Officer for the local council and as a Strategy & Commissioning Officer for Social Services and Primary Care Trust in London.

Ms Dale is a teacher of ICT delivering across KS3, 4 and 5 and is Assistant Director of the community

Miss Jinks gained a BA (Hons) in Business Studies at Wolverhampton University.  Her employment record includes being an Office Manager, a Trainee Accountant and a self-employed Driving Instructor, operating on the South Coast.  Delivering specific skill instruction to people persuaded Miss Jinks to enter the teaching profession and she successfully completed the Post-Graduate Certificate in Education course at Wolverhampton University.

Here at CCHS Miss Jinks teaches ICT to KS3, KS4 and KS5. She is also a Director of Year where her high expectations of individual students' development, achievement and behaviour are consistent with our whole school ethos.  Making a difference to students is really important to Miss Jinks and she is proud to be a member of the CCHS Pastoral Team.

Miss Roberts gained a BA (Hons) in Marketing & Economics from Birmingham City University, after which, she went on to run her own business in Birmingham. Following this she moved into the public sector, providing self-employment and business advice to the unemployed. Enjoying this exposure to ‘teaching’ she then gained her Post-Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of Worcester before starting her career in teaching.

At CCHS Miss Roberts teaches a range of subjects, from Business Studies to KS3 ICT. She is the sole teacher of BTEC Business at KS5, one of her most favoured subjects.

GCSE ICT

The content of this engaging course covers real life experiences within the ICT world, allowing learners to investigate and understand current and emerging technologies and their impact on business and social life.

The GCSE covers two units: Unit 1 -Living in a Digital World; Unit 2 - Using Digital Tools.

Unit 1 - Living in a Digital World

This unit explores how digital technology impacts on individuals, organisations and society. We look at issues raised by the use of digital technologies bearing in mind the inherent risks associated with the use off ICT. Topics include: Learning and Earning, Leisure and Health and Well-Being.

Unit 2 - Using Digital Tools

This is a practical unit, where learners are given the opportunity to develop and enhance their let skills and capabilities. Using a range of contexts, learners utilise a range of digital tools and techniques to produce effective ICT solutions to given problems.

Creative iMedia

Examination Board: OCR Cambridge Nationals Level 1/2 Award/Certificate - J817

Creative iMedia is suitable for everyone who is passionate about the creative aspects of ICT. This is a vocationally-related, high quality, industry recognised qualification that develops skills and techniques for using digital media. The qualification enables learners to gain relevant workplace skills and techniques, keeping them one step ahead in a highly competitive market. Learners need good existing ICT skills, creative thinking and above all a passion for digital media. They can choose to specialise in exciting and engaging digital and interactive media areas such as web authoring, digital graphics, digital animation or interactive multimedia design.

What we will do:

You can expect lessons to be engaging and give you the opportunity to explore your creative side. You will learn how to use a design brief to research, plan, create and review a range of digital products, all of which allow you to show off your digital talent. You will have access to the monitoring system which is a key assessment tool for this course; this enables you to identify and improve your progress.

Areas of study:

Each of the options will involve some extended writing so it is essential that you have appropriate literacy skills.

Where it will take you:

The hands-on approach of this qualification has strong relevance to the way young people use the technology required in creative media in today’s society. In addition to developing creative media digital skills and knowledge, students will acquire a number of essential transferable skills such as planning, research and analysis, working with other people and communicating creative concepts effectively; all of which are relevant to work or going on to further study.

Why choose GCSE Computing?

This course has real relevance in our modern world. Whilst learners may already have some knowledge of computers and related areas, the course provides an in-depth understanding of how computer technology works and a look at what goes on behind the scenes: including the opportunity to investigate computer programming.

The challenge of computing

Through this study of computer programming, the course will help learners develop critical thinking, analysis and problem solving skills. For many, it will be an interesting way to develop these skills, which can be transferred to other subjects and applied to day to day life. The course will stimulate interest and engagement with technology and technology related careers.

Looking to the future

Information technologies continue to grow in importance, meaning there will be a bigger demand for professionals who are qualified in this area. If learners want to go on to higher study and employment in the field of Computer Science they will find that this course provides a superb stepping stone. Learners who have taken a Computing GCSE and who then progress to study the subject at A Level or university will have a sound underpinning knowledge of this subject area.

This is a challenging and engaging course that requires a lot of hard work and commitment from students and offers a rewarding experience and a qualification that will be valued by future employers.

Assessment of the course is as follows:

WJEC GCSE Business Studies

The course is designed to give students an understanding of the way in which businesses operate in a dynamic, changing and competitive environment. They will learn how businesses in the UK make and sell goods by considering issues such as production methods, marketing and ways of organising the workforce. Candidates will explore the sources of finance that are available to businesses and begin to look at how they calculate their profits. Finally they will examine a variety of external factors such as the role of the government regarding taxation and laws, the European Union, and organisations such as pressure groups and trade unions.

Assessment

Business Studies is a linear course and assessment is through one end of course examination worth 75% and one controlled assessment worth 25%.

The controlled assessment is carried out in class under exam conditions, teacher assessed and verified by an external moderator.

You will have the opportunity to:

  • Carry out research on an aspect of the business environment.
  • Conduct group work to develop teamwork skills.
  • Learn how to present information and ideas using different tools and techniques such as ICT.
  • Develop your numeracy skills when looking at financial accounts.

AQA A Level Business Studies

By studying A Level Business Studies students will be introduced to new ideas and concepts while continuing to use and reinforce previously learned concepts and skills. The course is designed to give students a sound understanding of business concepts and the ability to use knowledge, analytical skills and problem solving techniques in the context of international markets and the United Kingdom. A good knowledge of current affairs is an added plus in students of business studies. AS

Unit 1 – BUSS1 Planning and Financing a Business 40% of AS, 20% of A level, 60 marks (1hr 15min)

In this unit, students are taught concepts in understanding the business environment and the key stages required in planning, when starting a business.

Unit 2 – BUSS2 Managing a Business 60% of AS, 30% of A level, 80 marks (1hr 30min)

In this unit, students learn about the operational strategies in running a successful business. Topics covered include quality management, marketing, managing the workforce, etc.

A2 Unit 3 – BUSS3 Strategies for Success 25% of A level, 80 marks (1hr 45min)

Questions requiring extended answers based on an unseen case study drawing upon knowledge from AS units.

Unit 4 – BUSS4 The Business Environment and Managing Change 25% of A level, 80 marks (1hr 45min)

The second section will consist of a choice of essays. All questions will be synoptic therefore drawing upon knowledge from all four units. The questions are linked to pre-release material, which is available from 31st January onwards in the year of examination.

A Level Business considers real-life businesses and the way in which accepted business theory relates to their operation. By studying the theory and applying it to the real world you will be able to better understand how decisions are made and can then make informed judgements and conclusions.

A Level Business will provide an exciting insight into the dynamic world of business, giving the basic skills necessary to produce a start, manage and grow a business organisation. Using a case study approach, you will develop skills of analysis, research and independent thinking so that you can develop your own balanced arguments.

BTEC Business Studies

Why study BTEC Business Studies?

A BTEC qualification in business gives students the knowledge, understanding and skills that they need to prepare for employment. The qualification provides career development opportunities for future employment and progression opportunities to higher education, degree and professional development programmes within the same or related areas of study, within universities and other institutions.

By studying this BTEC Business course students develop knowledge, understanding and skills required by the business sector, including essential employability skills, and apply them in real work contexts.

How will I be assessed?

All units on this course are assessed by internal assessment through set assignments and graded by your teachers. Assignments take variety of forms, such as reports, presentations, case studies and group activities. All tasks are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands which allows students to receive feedback on their progress as well as collect evidence towards the various grading criteria specified for each unit. It will be quality assured through internal and external moderation. The overall grades for the qualification which may be awarded to learners who successfully complete all units are Pass, Merit, Distinction and Distinction*.

Year 12 (Year 1) Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Certificate – 30 credits

The 30-credit BTEC Level 3 Certificate is broadly equivalent to one GCE AS Level.

During Year 1 students complete the following modules;

Unit 1 – The Business Environment

Unit 2 – Business Resources

Unit 3 – Introduction to Marketing

Students have the opportunity to ‘cash in’ the qualification at the end of the first year of student or continue to study in Year 13 to achieve the full A Level equivalent.

Some Year 13 students opt into Year 1 of the course to gain the Level 3 Certificate only.

Year 13 (Year 2) Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma – 60 credits

The 60-credit BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma is broadly equivalent to one GCE A Level. Students must have completed Year 1 of the course to achieve the Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma.

During Year 2 students complete the following modules;

Unit 4 – Business Communication

Unit 12 – Internet Marketing in Business

Unit 19 – Developing Teams in Business
