Physical Education

Introduction to the subject:

We believe that Physical Education is at the heart of developing a healthy lifestyle. We aim to develop students’ practical skills through a range of activities and sports. We also offer a wide range of qualifications that students can take to further develop their theoretical understanding of the subject.

KS3 Overview (information about how many lessons a week, topics covered, trips, facilities, equipment etc)

Students will have two lessons per week in Key Stage 3, each lasting one hour. These lessons will be practical lessons and include activities such as Football, Rugby, Netball, Hockey, Basketball, Badminton, Health Related Fitness, Trampolining and Gymnastics, Indoor Rock Climbing, Cricket, Rounders, Tennis, and Athletics.

KS4 Overview (information about how many lessons a week, topics covered, trips, facilities, equipment etc as well as GCSE exam board asnd course information

Students have the option to take GCSE PE in Key Stage 4. These students will follow the Edexcel GCSE PE syllabus and have three lessons per week. Lessons will be a mixture of practical and theory based learning, focussing on anatomy & physiology, health & skill related fitness, diet and nutrition, performance enhancing drugs and training principles and methods. Students will perform four practical activities for their final exam, as well as completing coursework on one of these activities. They will sit a one hour thirty minute exam.

Students who do not opt to take GCSE PE will study the Edexcel BTEC Award in Sport. They will study four units; Practical Performance, Training for Personal Fitness, Leading Sports Activities and Fitness for Sport and Exercise. These students will receive two lessons per week.

In Key Stage 5 students can opt to take the AS and A2 Edexcel Physical Education course, or the Edexcel BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma, Diploma, or Extended Diploma.

The Edexcel A level course is comprised of four units which are delivered over two years. In year 12, Students will cover units 1 and 2 and complete a range of coursework tasks which make up 50% of the AS grade. Unit 1 covers theoretical aspects such as Health & Fitness, Nutrition, History of the Olympic Games, Responses and Adaptations of the body systems. This is examined in a 90 minute exam.

In year 13, students again complete a range of coursework tasks such as the development plan, life plan, personal performance, and international study. The theoretical aspects cover the short-term and long-term preparation that athletes make prior to competition. This content is examined through a 2 hour examination.

The Edexcel BTEC Level 3 courses cover a wide range of units including, Anatomy & Physiology in Sport, The Physiology of Fitness, Fitness testing in Sport, Sports Nutrition, Sports Development, Practical Team or Individual Sport. The courses are delivered both in a practical and classroom setting. Students will complete both written assignments as well as demonstrating their practical abilities in sports performance and sports leadership.
